In the very center of Larissa rises the hill of Frourio, known to locals simply as "the Castle." It is the oldest continuously inhabited part of the city, carrying within it thousands of years of history – from prehistoric settlement and ancient Larissa to the Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern periods.
The Strategic Position of the Hill
The hill has always held a key location, close to the Pineios River, offering natural protection and panoramic views. For this reason, it was the administrative, military, and religious center of the city throughout the centuries. In antiquity, temples, the First Ancient Theatre, and important public buildings stood here.
The Medieval Fortress
During the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, the hill was fortified with walls and towers. Although most of the fortifications have not survived, the area still evokes the old fortress. A significant monument from that period is the Bezesteni, a covered 15th-century market that served as the commercial hub for fabrics and valuable goods.
Religious Landmarks
Dominating the hill is the Basilica of Saint Achilleios, patron saint of Larissa, originally built in the 6th century AD and rebuilt in the 20th century on the same site. This monument reminds visitors of the spiritual importance of the area through the ages.
Today's Atmosphere
Today, the hill of Frourio is a place for walking, culture, and relaxation. Its narrow streets, small cafés, and taverns give it the feel of an old neighborhood. In summer, cultural events and open-air concerts bring life back to this historic core.
Why Visit
The "Castle" is the best place to experience the roots of Larissa. It is an open-air museum where you can stroll among monuments from different eras and feel the city's evolution through time.
